2025 will see aviation and route development expert, Andrew Warrender step up as interim CEO of Newcastle Airport as outgoing CEO Dr. Peter Cock completes his decade of service to the airport and region. 

Mr. Warrender, currently serving as Executive Manager, Aviation and Air Freight Business Development, will commence as CEO on an interim basis, from Thursday, 9 January 2025 bringing a wealth of experience to this role.  

With a decade of expertise in the airport industry, Mr Warrender has held positions at Edinburgh Airport, North Queensland Airports, Northern Territory Airports, and Newcastle Airport. Throughout his career, he has been involved in four terminal expansions, route development initiatives, airport master planning, strategic property development, and complex commercial negotiations.

Mr Warrender said the focus of the business during his term as CEO would remain unchanged. “Our region is looking forward to the new airport terminal to open next year, and so are the airlines,” Mr Warrender said. “This last Financial Year saw our highest annual passenger numbers in the last five years indicating high passenger confidence in our airport and in travel for our region.” 

“Our Astra Aerolab Property Precinct and major property aspirations will also remain a strong focus."

Dr. Peter Cock said Mr Warrender’s deep understanding of airport operations made him well-suited to lead Newcastle Airport during this important transition period. 

“When Andrew joined my team in 2022, his enthusiasm for establishing new routes for the region and his dedication to tourism and economic development across regional Australia has been exceptional,” Dr. Cock said.  

“Being the Airport the region deserves is the highest purpose for our business, the local community should expect nothing less. I leave confident that the airport is in excellent hands with our skilled Board and Andrew leading the way.” 

Newcastle Airport Chair Jude Munro AO said the Board was delighted to welcome Andrew Warrender to the Interim CEO position extending their full support and best wishes for his success in this role. 

“We have a big year ahead of us in 2025 full of great opportunities, possibilities and achievements,” Ms. Munro said. “Together the airport team, under Andrew’s leadership, will bring this new stage in the Airport’s evolution to life.”
