Travelling with a disability

We want our passengers and visitors to enjoy their journey through our Airport, whatever their travel purpose - visiting friends, taking a family holiday or travelling for business.

The Newcastle Airport team and our partners are here to ensure all our passengers with specific accessibility needs travel through our airport with ease and comfort.

In the terminal

Departures and arrivals are located on the ground floor, so our passengers and visitors with a disability can move through the terminal with ease.

If you require specific assistance whilst inside the terminal, such as a wheelchair, you can prearrange this with your airline. Your airline can also help with reserving tickets, baggage handling and other needs you may have during transit.

Hidden Disabilities

1 in 6 people around the world live with a disability. And while some experience disabilities that are visible to others, many people live with non-visible conditions, or a combination of both. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a tool you can use to discreetly share that you have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent.

Newcastle Airport is proud to be a part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program.

You can now request a Sunflower lanyard to wear at Newcastle Airport to indicate that you or someone you care for may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time as you travel through our terminal. Our staff are trained to recognise this lanyard and provide support.

Please note: The Sunflower lanyard does not exempt passengers from normal travel procedures or provide a personal staff escort through the airport. Contact your airline in advance with your specific assistance needs (including wheelchair assistance).

How to request and collect your Sunflower lanyard

Let us know when you would like to collect your lanyard by completing this online form. Our Customer Care team will then be in touch to arrange collection from our Arrivals area.

Please note: Lanyard requests must be submitted at least one business day ahead of collection – unfortunately we may not be able to accommodate last-minute requests.

Parking

We have accessible car parking spaces for passengers and visitors with a disability in the Premium, Short Stay and Long Stay car parks. All pathways leading to the terminal from these car parks comply with Australian accessibility standards, ensuring ease of access.

Persons with a valid Disabled Parking Permit can park in the Short Stay Car Park for 60 minutes free of charge to drop off or pick up a passenger with a disability. The driver must take a ticket upon entry and be able to show a valid disability parking permit. If you are using this service, please let one of our uniformed airport staff members know and they will adjust your ticket and provide any assistance needed.

Pick-up & drop-off

Pick-up and drop-off areas are available in the Short Stay Car Park.

Persons with a valid Disabled Parking Permit can park in Short Stay for 60 minutes free of charge to drop off or pick up a passenger with a disability. The driver must take a ticket upon entry and be able to show a valid disability parking permit. If you are using this service, please let one of our uniformed airport staff members know and they will adjust your ticket and provide any assistance needed.

Federal Government security requirements mean your car must not be left unattended at any time in the departures or arrivals set down points. If you are picking up a passenger with a disability, we recommend parking in the Short Stay car park, locating your passenger and directing them to the pick-up zone.

To spend more time saying goodbye, or greeting a passenger, short term parking is available at no charge for the first 2 hours in our long stay saver or long stay overflow which includes our new designated waiting zone.
